About this blog

  • In Shakespeare's The Tempest, Prospero, Duke of Milan, is ousted by his brother and exiled to an island. With the help of a friend, Prospero manages to take with him his beloved library.

Prospero, like his creator, lived in a time when boundaries between disciplines were not as rigid as they are today. Prospero's books would have dealt with the cosmos—spiritual and material, inner and outer—as a whole.

In this blog, I try to do the same. I'm not Prospero, just a student rummaging through his library and writing in the margins. Prospero's Books is a blog about seeing the world as a whole, by looking at

    • signs, especially the relationships between signifiers and what they signify
    • stories, especially big-picture stories, such as myths and the works of Dante, Shakespeare, and Joyce
    • systems, especially complex, nonlinear systems
    • spirit, especially as understood by the Christian and Western esoteric traditions

    Welcome! Please join the conversation.

(Note: Although I admire Peter Greenaway's film Prospero's Books, this blog is not directly about that film. )

I am it. Now you are it.

Kwd_at_faculty_club Dr. Delaney Kirk, at Ask.Dr.Kirk, has tagged me. Now I'm it. My task: to share five things about myself that others don't know. (I'll interpret others as most others.)

  1. Besides a teacher and professor, I've worked as an actor, childbirth instructor and coach, editor, intelligence agent, journalist, magician's assistant, marketing copy writer, photographer, private detective, script writer, stage manager, survey interviewer, technical writer, and television producer.
  2. My newest hobby is geocaching. I'm part of a team, Team Chip, that my dog Chip heads up.
  3. My greatest fear is of heights, but I'm working at overcoming it.
  4. I was in the Supreme Court chamber in 1962 on the first day of the landmark school prayer case.
  5. My wife, Bette, and I live with two dogs (Taffy and Chip) and three cats (Tigger, Katie, and Moon Pie).

OK, my turn. I tag Chris Hodapp, Karmen, Sam, Chadwick Seagraves, and Matthew Stibbe. Tell us five interesting things about yourself that most people don't know.
